Drop off / Pick up

Please acquaint yourself with the Rice Traffic Plan (pdf). Remember that the first couple of weeks is very hectic. It is always good to give yourself extra time when dropping off your child. Consider dropping your child off on the east side of Gifford or along the back driveway instead of using the front drive. This area is always congested and difficult to exit. We allow the students in the building beginning at 7:50, so you can drop them off around that time. Always remember to be patient!!!

The number of students who ride the bus (according the PISD Transportation Department) is about 170. We currently have just under 1,170 students enrolled at Rice. As you can imagine, having 1,000 students arrive at school on foot or wheel is a lot, regardless of where they enter the campus. Please remember these guidelines:

  • WATCH FOR CHILDREN.
  • Be patient and follow all traffic signs.
  • If your child is in carpool, drop them off before 8:00. The building opens at 7:50. Major traffic congestion begins around 8:10 and starts clearing out around 8:25.
  • Drop off along the east side of Gifford (pull as far forward as possible to allow others to drop off behind you), or use the back driveway instead of the front driveway. Remember, there should be no student drop-off at all along the west side of Gifford.
  • Pay attention to the crosswalks and stop signs. Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way.

Thank you for your continued assistance ensuring the safety of our Rice Ravens.

Help the Children Fund

A few years ago Rice started a fund to help students and their families get through tough times. In the past we have purchased backpacks, clothing, school supplies, a used washing machine and groceries. Our fund is nearly depleted and Thanksgiving seems like a perfect time to share this need with you. If you find yourself in a position to help someone else, please help us build this fund.

The fund is called Help the Children fund. Checks are made out to “Rice Middle School” and the district finance office puts it in a separate account for Rice called Help the Children. All contributions are tax deductible. 100% of the money goes directly to help others. Rice is surrounded by beautiful homes, but the economy and health problems have changed some people’s plans. Please help us meet all the needs of our students.
